The Igloo Desktop Client can be a powerful asset for managing files and folders in your community. It's a secondary application available at support.igloosoftware.com/desktop, it lets you connect to your Igloo from your PC to add, edit, move, and delete files. You can install it on your machine for individual use, but it can also be implemented by your system administrator to PCs across your network, to give everyone the same freedom with files. 

Editing inline

Once the Desktop Client is enabled in the community, the Edit Now option will appear on all of the file previews. Selecting it will launch the Desktop Client, and you'll be able to log in to that and open the file with the default application for you computer. Once you've finished making the edits you need, save the document, and it will automatically be uploaded to your community as a new version. 

Moving documents

Opening the Desktop Client in the File Manager on your PC gives you a view of the community's architecture, including Pages, Spaces, and Folder Channels, and letting you navigate or search the structure to find the files you need. You can add files to folders here by dragging them in from your desktop or copying them into the folder, create new folders, and even drag files and folders to other Folder Channels in the community. 

The Desktop Client and access

All of the access rules in the community still apply when using the Desktop Client. In order to add files, people will need at least Write Access to a folder, and a minimum of Edit Access to change any documents or use the Edit Now option. Areas of the community that you don't have access to will not appear in the community structure, and cannot be found in search. 

The Desktop Client sees a lot of use in communities that focus on document and knowledge management, as well as communities in early stages that are focused on migrating a lot of files and folders from other services. The drag and drop functionality can save a lot of time when adding hundreds of files.
