Overview
Google Analytics is a third-party tool that you can use to understand how your members interact with your digital workplace. Google Analytics is available without cost but does require a Google Account.

Who can do this
Universal Analytics or Google Analytics 4
When adding Google Analytics to your digital workplace, you must follow the instructions related to the type of property you want to use: Universal Analytics or Google Analytics 4.

Google Tag Manager
In addition to Google Analytics, you can use Google Tag Manager to track event tags based on specific triggers. For information about setting up Google Tag Manager in your digital workplace, see Adding Google Tag Manager to your digital workplace.
How to add Universal Analytics
- Sign in to Google Analytics.
- Click Admin.
- At the top of the Account column, select the account you want to use.
- At the top of the Property column, select the property you want to use. Be sure to select a property that has a UA tracking code.
- From the Property column, select Tracking Info and then select Tracking Code.
- Copy the Tracking ID provided. The Tracking ID takes the form of UA-XXXXXX-XX.
- Go to your digital workplace.
- Click the Control Panel cog on the Userbar.
- Under Optimization, select Google Analytics.
- Paste your Tracking ID (copied in step 6) into the provided text box.
- Click Save.
How to add the Google Analytics 4 global site tag directly in your workplace
- Sign in to Google Analytics.
- Click Admin.
- At the top of the Account column, select the account you want to use. Be sure to select a Google Analytics 4 property.
- From the Property column, select Data Streams.
- Select your digital workplace from the list of Data Streams.
- Under Tagging Instructions, select Add new on-page tag, and then select Global Site Tag (gtag.js).
- Copy the provided script.
- Go to your digital workplace.
- Click the Control Panel cog on the Userbar.
- Under Optimization, select Meta Tags.
- Paste your Global Site Tag (copied in step 7) into the provided text box. To avoid replacing any existing information, you should paste this script at the bottom of the text box.
- Click Save.
How to add the Google Analytics 4 tag to Google Tag Manager
If you already have Google Tag Manager in your digital workplace, you can add a Google Analytics: GA4 Configuration tag to your tag manager. See Google's instructions; add your tag using Google Tag Manager.
Next step: Site search - Universal Analytics
You must enable Site Search to allow for more in-depth reporting on how digital workplace members are using search. This tracking provides information on full searches done within a digital workplace (searches that result in navigation to the search page), but not quick searches (the list that appears as you type a search term).
- Sign in to Google Analytics.
- Click the Admin.
- At the top of the Account column, select the account you want to use.
- At the top of the Property column, select the property you want to use. Be sure to select a property that has a UA tracking code.
- Under the View column, select View Settings.
- Turn Site Search Tracking on.
- Enter the following term into the Query Parameter text box: search.
- Click Save.

To verify that site search is enabled:
- Sign in to Google Analytics.
- Click Admin.
- At the top of the Account column, select the account you want to use. Be sure to select a Google Analytics 4 property.
- From the Property column, select Data Streams.
- Select your digital workplace from the list of Data Streams.
- Under the Enhanced measurement section, click the cog.
- Verify that Site search is enabled and that Search Term Query Parameter includes the term search.
