As clients' digital workplaces grow, one of the areas emerging from that growth is a Space dedicated to their Igloo's Space Administrators. When your digital workplace has more than a dozen Spaces, each with their own admins, an area for them to work together and share best practices becomes invaluable, and offers a space for mutual mentorship, where they can learn from each other. Spaces like this are typically locked away from most members and often work in tandem with the sandbox Space we've covered, giving Space Administrators a place to test ideas without interfering in the day to day operations of their Space.
Position the Space in your architecture alongside project spaces or communities of practice. After all, it's a community of practice for your Space Administrators before anything else. The Bulk Member Upload function makes it easy to put all of your digital workplace's Space Administrators into the Groups there. When deciding on an administrative model, we recommend making all of the members there Space Administrators of that area. There's a temptation to appoint some Space Administration Space Administrators, but that's as complicated to use as it is to write. Every member of this Space has the responsibilities of a Space Administrator somewhere else, and affording them the same level of access here will ensure they have the access to create, collaborate, and learn.
Wiki and Forum Channels are essential to a Space like this, letting people document best practices or peculiar implementations, and ask and answer each other's questions in an easily searchable way. It's also worthwhile to include a short training section to help onboard new Space Administrators. Remember that the videos from our training area can be embedded in your digital workplace by copying the iframe code.
Microblog Channels are essential to quick communication, and serve the same purpose here, letting people share ideas or new features they're exploring, and see how others have already used them. They can also be a useful avenue for your Workplace Administrators to communicate directly with team leads, discussing site changes and gathering feedback. Everyone in your Space Administration area is responsible for running some corner of your Igloo, so regardless of department, they have common ground.
Spaces in digital workplaces tend to start as standard templates and quickly become idiosyncratic. There are constants in every area, of course, but Space Administrators have the power to mold their Spaces until they best fit the work their team does, and the platform is designed to accommodate that. An Administration Space does more than let them share knowledge, it builds a culture of empowered administrators, who use their expertise to help each other and their own teams.
If you have questions about the Igloo platform, workflows, or best practices, you can leave a comment here, or ask a question in the Community area.
