What is a KPI?
A key performance indicator (KPI) is a measurable value that demonstrates how effectively a company is achieving key business objectives. Generally, most organizations use KPIs at multiple levels to evaluate their success at reaching targets. So, how do you track and measure the success of your digital workplace? First, it's important to measure what matters most to your organization.
At Igloo, we recommend creating a KPI Chart, it's a great tool for organizing and aligning key KPIs against the goals and objectives from your digital workplace plan.
Building a KPI Chart
Building a KPI Chart should be a quick and relatively easy process. Before you get started, think about the three different categories of KPIs:
- Workplace KPIs: Company-wide KPIs that are applicable to the entire organization (e.g. improved corporate communications).
- Team KPIs: Team-based KPIs that are applicable to specific teams in the organization (e.g. departments, projects, offices).
- Solution KPIs: Solution-specific KPIs that are applicable to a digital workplace solution (e.g. Newsroom, Onboarding Center, Employee Handbook).
Step 1: Choose your primary KPI
The first step is to determine your primary KPI. At Igloo, we recommend that your KPI Chart be focused around one key business challenge that your digital workplace is trying to solve for. The most common business challenges include:

- Knowledge Management
- Culture and Engagement
Step 2: Brainstorm and finalize your key objectives
The second step is to determine the step you need to take to reach your success goals. Objectives should be narrow and descriptive, aligning with the KPI you've chosen to focus on.
Step 3: Create a mechanism to track and report
The third step is to identify how you will track and report your results. Tracking results should be easy and should leverage analytics and reporting tools, such as Google Analytics, Workplace Analytics, and/or visualization tools. You may even decide to use measurement tools like surveys or polls.
Step 4: Determine your goals for success
The fourth step in the process is to define clear and measurable goals which align to the business challenge you are trying to solve and the objectives you've set out in step 2. Goals must be measurable, have timelines, and be tracked on a regular cadence. If you have an existing digital workplace, use a Benchmark Report to ensure your setting meaningful and measurable goals.
Step 5: Create programs to drive engagement and adoption
The fifth step is to create and deploy engagement programs which will drive employee adoption within your digital workplace and help you reach the goals you've set. Make sure the programs align with your strategy and that you have the necessary resources and budget to effectively implement them.
Step 6: Analyze success and continuous improvement
The final step is to leverage reporting and analytics to measure and analyze your success. It is recommended that you create a continuous improvement program to manage change — both in the long and short term.

Do you have an existing Digital Workplace?
If you already have a digital workplace or intranet up and running in your organization, setting the goals for your KPI Chart will be slightly different than a brand new one. Igloo recommends creating a Benchmark Report (e.g. trailing 6 to 12 months) and use the results from this report to set your goals for improvement in your KPI Chart.
