Creating spoke sites in your network

Spoke sites are individual digital workplaces. Think of it as a separate site that is connected to the hub for information sharing. It has it's own members, structures, design and solutions.

What is a spoke site?

A spoke site provides a community of users a digital workplace where they can work together. These communities often have a specific theme or interest that brings them together. Membership to a spoke site is controlled directly, however, whenever a spoke site adds a member, that member is also automatically added to the hub site's [All Members] group. Spoke members are a subset of hub members, so not all members in the hub will be in every spoke. Access rights

Spoke sites can be set up with the following set of global access rights:

  1. Public: The spoke site is open to the public and does not require members or anonymous users to authenticate in order to view site content. 
  2. Member only: The spoke site is set to private and requires members to authenticate using a sign-in page to access the site.
  3. Hybrid: The spoke site is set to public but has areas only accessible to members who log in.

Note: We recommend working with an Igloo Consultant to evaluate and set up the appropriate authentication and access rights. 

Key characteristics

  • It is a separate site (meeting legal, ethical, locality, or security requirements).
  • It is managed by a specific team (e.g. office, franchise group, member affiliate).
  • It has its own membership.
  • It has its own URL.
  • It has its own digital workplace solutions.
  • It can have its own branding.
  • It targets content, communications, and collaboration to a specific segment or sub-population.
  • It is connected to the hub site, and its members are also members there.

Networked Enterprise Tip: Use templates for consistency 

Using a template to add new spokes to your networked enterprise is not only efficient, but creates consistency in structure, navigation, global settings, and to some extent, look and feel. Identify common elements that you want to have across your spoke sites. Do those elements align with your central hub or are they unique to the spoke sites? Depending on your use case and the purpose of your spoke sites, you may want to create a template based on your central hub or based on a spoke.

Here are the most common spoke site solutions within the Networked Enterprise Edition:

  1. Boardroom: A secure and private external site for communicating and collaborating with board members.
  2. Customer Portal: A public site for communicating and collaborating with customers.
  3. Community of Practice (COP): A site that connects a community of professionals that work within the same domain (e.g. legal, finance, or chefs).
  4. Community of Interest (COI): A site that connects a community of professionals with similar interests (e.g. international law, privacy, or security).
  5. Deal Room: A private site that brings together a cross-functional team working a specific deal (e.g. sales team, acquisition team, or merger team).
  6. Dept Room: A private site that provides a digital workplace for large departments within an organization.
  7. Franchise site: A private site that provides a digital workplace for remote franchise teams usually spread across different geographies.
  8. Member firm: A private site that provides a digital workplace for firms that are focused on a specific domain of expertise (e.g. financial accounting or consulting services).
  9. Office: A private site that provides a digital workplace for geographically dispersed offices.
  10. Vendor portal: A private site that provides a digital workplace for collaborating and communicating with key vendors.
